About Trident Literacy

A community with illiteracy affects all within the community.

Being functionally illiterate means being unable to perform a variety of skills that are essential for success in daily life, like filling out a job application or getting a driver's license, reading a medicine label or using a telephone book - factors that severely limit one's opportunities for employment or advancement.

The mission of Trident Literacy Association is to increase literacy in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties by offering instruction, using a self-paced, individualized curriculum in reading, writing, mathematics, English as a Second Language, GED preparation, and basic computer use.

With the help of more than 200 volunteers and dozens of community collaborators, Trident Literacy Association (TLA) serves more than 2000 students annually.

Founded in 1972, Trident Literacy Association has a proven record of positive outcomes.

Students have enjoyed success in:

  • educational advancement,
  • employment,
  • job retention,
  • job advancement,
  • reading to their children,
  • helping their children in school.

Volunteers and supporters are welcomed and appreciated.
